Sheldon was a typical eight-year-old – full of life! But everything changed in an instant one afternoon during an asthma attack. He was rushed by helicopter to Florida Children’s Hospital, but his condition worsened to uncontrollable bleeding and unconsciousness. Over a short period of time, Sheldon needed ninety-two units of blood. His condition kept deteriorating and his bleeding was unexplainable and seemed unstoppable. As Sheldon lay quiet and helpless, his family filled his room with their prayers, and asked others to pray for him too. From the chaplain to the nurses and blood bank employees, everyone prayed for him. Everything that could be done medically had been done for him. The odds were against him and his situation was grim. With Sheldon’s condition worsening, the surgeon had to concede, "It will be God, if Sheldon lives – it will be God." A final surgery was scheduled, a desperate attempt to find the sources of bleeding, but Sheldon had only a one percent chance of making it through. Lifting her eyes from prayer, Sheldon’s mom begged the chaplain to go into surgery to pray for the physicians and Sheldon’s life. For nearly seven hours in the operating room, the chaplain prayed for God to guide the hand of the surgeon. The physicians and nurses worked as the Chaplain prayed quietly from the corner. Although her presence was minimal, the power of God’s presence and healing touch were phenomenal. After hours of surgery and prayer, Sheldon’s condition moved from hopeless to a miracle. With the surgery successful, and countless prayers answered, Sheldon’s family and caregivers fell into each other’s arms with tears of joy and prayerful gratitude. In God’s perfect timing, a miracle started unfolding in Sheldon’s life. His struggle had been long but God’s healing touch was restoring him. In each step toward recovery, God touched Sheldon through the care of the nurses, the hands of the surgeons, the prayers of the family, and the chaplain who prayed from the corner.
