She was nearing the end of the road. And she could sense it. Struggling to breathe, lonely and afraid, Mary lay in her hospital bed. Eighty-eight years of life and now this, alone in the hospital and not prepared to face the inevitable. As Mary searched for hope and courage, nurse Cindy entered the room. She had nearly called in sick, feeling tired, run-down and worn-out. She prayed silently, “God, use me to touch this dear woman.” After praying, Cindy warmly greeted Mary. And she felt an unseen presence urging her to ask, “Mary, do you feel ready to enter the Kingdom of heaven?” Mary’s eyes widened, and she shared how she had often felt a Higher Power guiding her life. And she said, “I guess so, I just don’t know what lies ahead.” It was in that moment that Cindy knew why God had prompted her to go to work that day despite her exhaustion. With God by her side, she opened to Mary the wonderful truth about her Savior and His promises of eternal Life. Cindy took Mary’s hands in hers, patient and nurse, and prayed for life, comfort and peace for Mary. For the first time in years Mary was hopeful. She felt God’s healing touch of assurance just when she needed it most through the power of prayer and the ministry of a loving nurse who helped her find peace in her last hours.
